33 Acres of Sunshine
33 Acres
There are certain beers that have become BC standards. Such beers are widely available, produced locally and are much loved by those who drink them. Beer’s like Driftwood’s Fat Tug IPA, Hoyne’s Dark Matter and Four Winds’ Saison are the year-round go-to standards for many in the province. 33 Acres of Sunshine is another classic example of one of those beers.
33 Acres of Sunshine is a ‘French Blanche’, which is basically a fancy name for ‘wheat beer’. Unsurprisingly in France they don’t refer to the style as ‘French Blanche’ but instead ‘bière blanche’, which literally translates as ‘white beer’.
Sunshine was one of the first beers produced at 33 Acres when they first opened their doors in 2013 and it has been made it to a similar standard ever since. Along with the classic flaked wheat base the beer is brewed with Aurora Golding hops to produce peppy notes of anise, coriander, and candied orange.
Tasting Notes
Pours a pale straw yellow with a light head. Some wisps of sediment are present at the bottom. The nose is fresh stone fruits, peach, lemongrass, coriander and yeast. The taste is light and refreshing with white peach, nectarine and anise. A long dry finish. Well rounded and bright, 33 Acres is a delicious summertime beer.
Will I like it?
If you like Hoegaarden, Blanche de Chambly or Kronenbourg Blanc, you’ll also love 33 Acres of Sunshine as it belongs to the same family. In terms of food pairings, wheat beers go well with pretty much anything that isn’t a dessert. Try enjoying this with risotto, seafood pasta or a French classic like moules marinières.
